Onagawa Town

One of the lively port town in Japan.
A port town that is located east of Tohoku. The ria coast, where the Kitakami Mountains and the Pacific Ocean meet, forms a good natural port, and the aquaculture industry of oysters, scallops, sea squirts, and coho salmon is thriving, and many fish species are landed in the fish market throughout the year. About 70 percent of the houses in the town was broken down by Tohoku earthquake. Even though the town damaged so bad, young people are working on town developing for the restoration from the disaster.

Onagawa Onsen Yupoppo

Starting station of JR Ishinomaki line. One of the famous architect Shigeru Ban designed the station and rebuilt in 2015. The round big roof which is imaged black-tailed gulls flying. From the third-floor deck of the station, you can see the town of Onagawa and Onagawa Bay. An adjoining hot spring facility ‘’Onagawaonsen Yupoppo’’ is also our recommendation. On the interior wall of the building, a huge tile art, that was directed by Japanese-style painter Hiroshi Senju and Eiji Mitooka, which is combined 917 paintings of flower, which were collected by a public offer, with Senju’s artwork is painted.

Seapal Pier Onagawa / Local market HAMA-TERACE

Seapal-Pier Onagawa in front of Onagawa Station is a commercial facility that has various stores such as retail stores, workshops and restaurants. In the workshop area, you can view production of guitars and Danborugini (Lanborghini made of cardboard). You can also experience Spain tile painting, but reservation will be needed for it. Adjoining local market Hama Terrace sells processed seafoods and fresh seafoods particular to port town Onagawa. The market is tourist foods facility which is consisted of 8 stores that are themed ocean such as a restaurant that serves Onagawa donburi and sweet.

Onagawa Machinaka Exchange Center

Functional facility, themed as ‘’A bustle exchanging base that be living room of the town, and be comfortable.’’ built along bricks road in front of Onagawa Station. You can view the display of history of Onagawa and state of restoration construction at lobby.

Again station

A facility that restored the appearance of former JR Onagawa Station. Not only souvenirs from Onagawa, but also special products from coastal areas such as Ishinomaki and Kesennuma are available. If you make a reservation in advance, you can experience processing and shipping preparation, cooking and tasting of farmed seafoods in Onagawa Bay, such as scallops and sea squirts.

Community space UMINECO

The only remaining building in Takashirohama、Onagawa town has been revived as a processing factory and community café ‘’Yume House’’. As a facility for the affected people to be independent, they do production and sale of cloth sandals and woodwork products using T-shirts that are no longer worn, and they have figs orchards. Also, the facility is used for volunteers and affected people as an exchanging place. Reservations are required by the day before ‘’Yumedamazukuri’’ which makes straps that imitate the floats that fishermen use as landmarks and floats for fishing nets for a long time.
